Seeds Of Hope

From working for no wages, Ilia and Maria are now making a living by growing their own veg.

Ilia and Maria used to work in a local dressmaking factory. But with the collapse of the economy in Bulgaria, small companies are 'deferring payment of wages'. So in spite of three months hard work, Ilia and Maria were left with nothing. Ilia took the decision to leave - he wanted to find a better way to earn a living.

Maria says, 'It's been difficult for us.' The family have to pay nursery and lunch fees for their two children, and employment opportunities locally are limited. 'Our monthly budget barely covers our utilities and ongoing expenses. We have very little left for food.'

Last spring, MWB gave a Seeds of Hope box to the family. With this, the family believes they have been given a future. 'Now, because of these seeds, we have so many different things to eat. It's been a privilege for us to plant a vegetable garden. What we're growing for ourselves today will be so good for the children's nutrition. With living costs constantly on the rise, we will have quality vegetables; a luxury we couldn't afford if we had to buy them ourselves.'

Seeds of Hope is one of MWB's initiatives promoting self-sufficiency. Each parcel costs just R225 to pack and distribute. Could you help a family to grow their way out of poverty?
